Government announces pay deal for NHS staff

Lots of loose change on top of each other in no order

The government announced yesterday that they have accepted the recommendations from the independent NHS pay review bodies in full.

The government has awarded NHS workers a one-off pay increase of £1,400 instead of the traditional fixed percentage rise. The percentage will differ depending on your current salary.

Please note that we are unclear what this means for individuals at this stage and await further clarity from NHS Employers.  NHS Employers is in the process of updating pay scales.

The Government confirmed that:

  • All staff under the Agenda for Change (AFC) contract, including nurses, paramedics and midwives, will benefit from a pay rise of at least £1,400 this year backdated to April 2022.
  • The lowest earners will see a 9.3% increase in their basic pay this year, compared with last year.
  • The basic pay for newly qualified nurses will increase by 5.5%, from £25,655 last year to £27,055.
  • Dentists and doctors within the Doctors and Dentists’ Remuneration Body (DDRB) will receive a 4.5% pay rise.
  • Very senior managers will receive a 3% increase.

'We don't know the full detail of what this means just yet for everyone'
I'll tell you what this means. It means more of the same: demoralised, overworked, undervalued, burnt-out and disillusioned staff who for the 14th consecutive year are receiving a real terms pay cut. Our junior doctors are graduating with eye watering and unprecedented amounts of debt that our policy makers never experienced, and are receiving a pay rise significantly less than that of all other health care workers for the second consecutive year. It means more rota gaps, less morale (if it were mentally possible), more people leaving, and harder to recruit. As a consultant, I'm finding it very difficult to look my trainees in the eye and honestly tell them that it has been worth the rigmarole of training so hard and for so long. They could have become train drivers and earn much more than they do as a junior doctor, with a strong union backing them, or they could have saved themselves from thousands of pounds of debt and trained as a plumber or electrician and enjoyed a better QoL earlier on in their careers.
I have very little doubt the 'pay rise' will mean something very similar to our hard working nurses, ODPs, therapists, pharmacists, dieticians and everyone else who works so hard and so thanklessly on the front line for their pittance, and in the one of the most expensive cities in the world.
Finally, the sobering truth of all of this? If recent trends are anything to go by, then we can all continue to look forward to more of the same with year-on-year real terms pay cuts for more graft, less thanks, and psychological punishment.
That is what this means for everyone.

This is all well and good and I applaud that at least some money is going to NHS staff, HOWEVER there are a lot of staff that were just as vital during the last few years and indeed in all the years that we have worked here, what about those staff ?? Blah blah we shall keep you updated just means that you are not included, never were and probably wont be ...

This is not a pay rise. It's a pay cut. Unions are balloting their members about industrial action. If you are a union member, please ensure that they have up to date details for you so that you can have your say.

In the interest of completeness, it would've been instructive to include the current inflation rate.
We can probably guess what it means for most of us.

Does any one know how this £1400, pay increases to Part time staff. I am assuming it will be less for part time staff. Still a pay cut, in real terms. Really wondering if I can still afford to be a nurse. 30 years experience, feel like my life has been wasted.

This is not a pay rise. It's a pay cut. The Government has imposed this on NHS staff without negotiating with trade unions. The amount is nowhere the inflation rate and comes on top of years of frozen pay. Unison will be balloting members about taking industrial action against this; see the FAQs.
If you are a Unison member please ensure your contact details are update. You can join Unison here.
The majority of the public support a above inflation pay rise for NHS staff and taking industrial action against this. The Trust is out of step by celebrating this pay award.
Unison is also negotiating about our Serco colleagues pay for this year

This is so unclear to us however, the truth about whatever ''pay rise'' we getting is going back to the government in form of tax. In my opinion it's not worth it.

    From pay review body
"The £1,400 uplift should be enhanced for the top of Band 6
and at Band 7 so it is equal to a 4% uplift for those staff. "
You forgot to add that bit on. Otherwise its only around 3% for Band 7 staff. Can you confirm this?
4% is still absolute rubbish though.

Does this pay rise also apply to the Administration Staff as well? Every time there is a pay rise award no one mentions the supporting admin staff, only the medical staff get mentioned. The admin staff provide a very important part of the NHS service to the public. Without admin staff it would be prett impossible to keep the hospitals running.

    Dear Susan Finn,
The so called pay rise is available to all staff across the NHS in all roles this includes Cleaners, Admin & clerical Staff, Nurses, Doctors, Radiology, Therapists and so all staff get this so called Pay Rise which is not actual a pay rise it more like a pay cut if you do the maths versus the rate of inflation and the cost of living not to mention by the time you get taxed on this as well you don't end up with the £1,400 quoted by government or Bart's Health NHS Trust I am afraid to say, as UNIONs we recommend that to show the government this not acceptable strike action may have to be option to get our voices heard and bring them back to table for negotiations but Yes admin & clerical and support services are getting this money also to answer your question, there are two main UNION's for admin and clerical staff to join at Bart's Health NHS Trust which are recognised by the Trust Recognition agreement these are UNISON or UNITE, if anyone wish to join UNISON they can do this by visiting the website https://join.unison.org.uk/ if you are already a member of UNISON & want to make sure you get updated on NHS pay then please go to the website https://my.unison.org.uk/ to update your membership details so you are included in updates to do with pay rise information you can also follow UNISON Bart's & the London Branch on our social media platforms Twitter @UnisonbartsL on Facebook @UnisonBartslondonbranch or on Instagram @unisonbartsandthelondon or our website by visiting https://barts.unison.site/barts-and-the-london/ Unfortunately I don't have the information for Unite as I am UNISON rep however if you visit there website this may give you some information https://www.unitetheunion.org/ I hope this information is useful and helps answer your questions However my advise to all members in all UNIONS is to be STRIKE READY!!
